Just after 9:00 PM, on Wednesday, July 20th, the City of Newburgh Fire Department responded to a report of an alarm sounding and smoke on the first floor of the residence at 46 Wilkins Street.

Arriving firefighters entered the residence and were able to locate a bedroom fire on the second floor. Crews immediately stretched a hand line to the second floor and went to work extinguishing the fire.

Due to the extremely hot and humid conditions, a second alarm was called resulting in additional fire departments being brought in to assist with salvage and overhaul, ensuring that the fire was fully extinguished.

Two city firefighters and the building occupant suffered minor injuries and were transported to St. Luke’s hospital by Mobile Life Support ambulance for further evaluation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation but appears to be accident in nature. Coldenham, West Point, and Air National Guard assisted at the scene. Cronomer Valley and Good Will Fire departments stood by in the public safety building.
