Police Requirements

Police Officer candidates must be at least 19 years old and must not have reached his/her 35th birthday on or before the date of the written examination, provided, however, that time spent on military duty or terminal leave, not exceeding a total of seven years, shall be subtracted from the age of any applicant who has passed his thirty-fifth birthday per Military Law Section 243(10-a). Other requirements include:

  • High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (GED)
  • Legal residency in Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, Dutchess, Putnam Rockland or Westchester County
    • Residency within 25 miles of the City of Newburgh (at the time of appointment)
  • US Citizenship (on appointment)
  • Valid NYS Drivers’ License (on appointment)
  • No felony convictions without NYS Relief from Disabilities Certificate for qualified individuals
  • Police Officer Physical Fitness Standards (PDF)

Candidates who pass the written exam are placed on the eligibility list in order from the highest to lowest grade. Preference in appointment is provided to City of Newburgh residents.
