The City Historian is appointed by the City Manager under City Charter §3.91 and entrusted to ascertain the historical significance of various records, documents, and reports and make recommendations to preserve such materials according to best practices in a professionally-managed archive.
The City Historian also maintains a limited collection of physical and digital records, documents and photographs at the old 1841 Courthouse at 123 Grand Street. These records can be viewed by appointment only.
The current City Historian is Mary McTamaney, a retired librarian and library administrator whose family first came to Newburgh in 1856.
