Newburgh's second outdoor sculpture biennial, the Newburgh Sculpture Project (NSP) 2006, will host nearly 20 temporary site-responsive public sculptures along the streets of Newburgh's Waterfront district and Heritage Corridor (from Front St. to Liberty St.) Participating artists include: Alejandro Dron, Thom Joyce, Bernard Klevickas, Michael Konrad, Roxanne Marieniello, Meadow, Kerry Mills, Ray Neufeld, Franc Palaia, Winn Rea, Stuart Sachs, Abby Sadauckas, Dana Shea, Robert Sparacin, Roy Staab, Oona Stern, and Steed Taylor.
Located across the Hudson River from the Dia Beacon museum and one exit north of Storm King Art Center, Newburgh's post-industrial landscape is home to a growing art community that is particularly well suited for sculpture.
"The NSP represents a grassroots effort by local artists to revitalize the city by dynamically placing their artwork directly in public space. By including projects ranging from land art and site-specific installations addressing socially or politically significant issues to more intimate works exploring personal relationships with place, the Newburgh Sculpture Project will offer a variety of viewpoints covering multi-faceted aspects of Newburgh's landscape. The project's aim is for visitors and residents to experience this area of the city in a new and unexpected way," said NSP Coordinator Kerry Mills.
The NSP will be on view throughout the summer and fall of 2006. There will be an opening reception at the Café Macchiato at 99 Liberty Street from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, July 29. The July 29 opening is scheduled in conjunction with RAW (River Art Walk) from noon until dusk at the Newburgh Waterfront.
Maps of the project will be available at the opening River Art Walk, the local library and online at www.newburghsculptureproject.org.
