Mayor Nicholas J. Valentine proclaimed Black History Month in the City of Newburgh on February 9, 2009. City Council meetings in February included special presentations and awards.

At each Council meeting, three local students read their winning essays from the 2009 "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebrating the Dream" Committee Essay Contest.

On Feb. 9, the following students read their essays:

  • Mirna Wilson, South Junior High School
  • Jamie Hectus, Sacred Heart School
  • Sarah Campos, NFA

On Feb. 23, the following students read essays:

  • Chrysanthe Gianiodis, South Junior High
  • Kerysha Lowrey, Fostertown School
  • Robert Graham, NFA

The essay writers and Carl Hamilton, Celebrating the Dream Committee chair, all received Certificates of Recognition from the Mayor and Council.

The Glenn E. Hines Memorial Boys & Girls Club African Dance Company highlighted the Feb. 23 meeting.

Also on Feb. 23, Aquanetta Wright introduced the sponsors of the 2008 Ferry Godmother summers Jazz Series. They received certificates from Mayor and Council, as did each member of the Dance Company.
