Suggested in response to the 9/11 attacks by Father Bill Scafidi, the Newburgh Trestle Mural "Archways" was finally dedicated on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007. The mural, covering a portion of the railroad trestle running along the riverfront, consists of five realistic archways containing scenes of Newburgh: Downing Park, Broadway, Washington's Headquarters, the former Dutch Reformed Church, and Crawford House, home of the Historical Society. Each scene includes roughly life-size figures, some of whom are recognizable as contemporary local residents.
Designed by local artist Garin Baker, the mural was executed by a team of painters including Mr. Baker, Bryan Guglielmi, Peter Cody, Natalia Zdanovskaia, Don Herron, Racheal Weidkam, Nancy Harris, Robert Nicklin, and Anna Weber.
The dedication featured remarks from Trestle Inc. chair Kiki Hayden, Newbugh Mayor Nick Valentine, Congressman Maurice Hinchey, State Sentator William Larkin, County Executive Edward Diana, Newburgh City Manager Jean Ann McGrane, painter Garin Baker, and Father Bill Scafidi. |
