Fire damage at Xavier Lunan Park

Xavier Lee Lunan's "Little Bit of Heaven" playground was dedicated May 29, 2004 to the memory of the three year old who was murdered in 1999.

Update - October 2007

Xavier Lunan Park is open for enjoyment. The park is fully utilized afterschool and on weekends.

On Saturday, November 3, 10am - 12 noon, a "green up" project will beautify the park. The Shade Tree Commission, and the Clean and Green Coordinator, in partnership with some local nonprofit organizations will plant trees, bushes and a garden.

In 2006, a fire in the building next door to the park at 64 Courtney Avenue caused severe damage. Much of the park was also damaged, including two trees and play equipment. During the summer of 2006, the City removed the structure at No. 64.

City staff worked with local children to vision the restored park space. This included an expanded, open and flexible intergenerational space. Work consisted of segregating the equipment by age appropriateness, expanding picnicking area and creating a flexible play space.

Principal work is being completed in June 2007. The new rubber play surface and fencing will be constructed later.
