The goal of the City’s film office is to help film professionals scout prospective sites, navigate local permits and processes, and utilize County, Regional and New York State resources such as state tax credits!

They say location, location, location and Newburgh, New York delivers! Located in the beautiful Hudson Valley; Newburgh is a geographical gem at the crossroads of the northeast. The rolling hills and shining Hudson River of Newburgh are only an hour north of New York City. Newburgh is also close to three other great cities; 1.5 hours south of Albany, 3 hours west of Boston and 3 hours north of Philadelphia. With the intersection of I-87 and I-84 less than mile outside the city, Newburgh is poised to be your next filming location.

New York State has established itself as an effective promoter of the film industry. The state offers a 30% tax credit for both production and post-production activities.

The Orange County Film Office is also dedicated to attracting film makers to the County as well as providing scouting assistance.

The City of Newburgh also offers resources to enhance and encourage the film industry that include a quick and responsive film office, complementary tours of possible film sites, and help navigating city permits. Anything that is needed the city can provide from street closures to recommending a restaurant.

The Cityscape

Newburgh has many unique features; with four centuries of architecture, the widest main street in New York State, and the oldest state historic site Washington Headquarters) in the United States and a multitude of churches of historic various styles, all within a short walk.

Downing Park, designed by famed landscape architects Frederic Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux in 1897, features 39 acres of parkland and beautiful gardens within the city limits. Olmstead and Vaux’s mentor Andrew Jackson Downing, often credited as the “Father of American Landscape Architecture”, was a favorite son and inspired many of the glorious homes in the City’s historic east end. The dramatic landscape and the confluence of urban grit with architectural splendor makes Newburgh the perfect setting for many film genres.

Umbra of Newburgh is a great film studio that includes a 16,000 square foot sound stage, 6,000 square feet of scenic construction space, 4,000 square feet of office space , and a 1,500 square foot cyclorama for infinite white and blue/green screen. The city also houses the Newburgh Actor’s Studio, which develops the talent pool in the area. The Newburgh Armory Unity Center is also a NY State qualified film production facility with over 23,000 sq. ft. available. There are many theatrical stages throughout Newburgh, including Just Off Broadway, Aquinas Hall at Mount Saint Mary College, and the Newburgh Enlarged School District.

The City houses other film friendly businesses as well. The Downing Film Center is a small not-for-profit movie theater that specializes in showing independent, foreign and classic films, but also shows the occasion blockbuster. The Ritz Theater is also a great professional performing arts venue where Lucille Ball and Frank Sinatra got their debut.
