Career Firefighters

New Firefighters are hired from a list established by the City of Newburgh Civil Service Office. Testing occurs every 3–4 years. The next examination is tentatively scheduled for March 2012, with applications due about six weeks prior to the exam date.

A record number of 192 applicants took the exam in 2007 (pdf).

To take the exam, you must be a high school graduate or have a high school equivalency diploma (GED). There is no minimum or maximum age requirement to take the exam with NO FELONY CONVICTIONS.

Candidates who pass the written exam are placed on the list in order from the highest to lowest grade.

Candidates must also pass a physical agility test, an interview process, background checks, and a pre-employment medical exam. Preference in hiring is extended to city residents.

The current (2012) starting salary is $40,000, increasing annually, reaching $59,757 after 6 years.

Dispatchers & Clerical Staff

Candidates for these positions must pass an interview process, background checks and a pre-employment medical exam.
