What you need to know to comply.

Yards and Properties

o Should be maintained free of litter, trash, and debris of any kind

o Household garbage should be stored in cans with lids and located in the rear of the

property whenever possible (see sanitation collection rules for further detail)

o Driveways, public and private sidewalks must be maintained in good repair and free of

ice and snow accumulations

o Lawns should be mowed and properties maintained free of weed overgrowth

o Properties should not be a harborage for rodents

o Structures such and garages, retaining walls, fences and sheds should be in good repair

o Only registered and licensed vehicles should be stored on property

o Swimming pools and their enclosures should be maintained in full compliance with

applicable codes or completely removed (contact City of Newburgh Building Dept. for

details)

Exterior of Buildings

o Should be maintained in good repair

o Wood surfaces exposed to the elements should be protected from decay

o An address number should be displayed on the exterior of the building visible from the

street (4"minimum)

o Roofs and gutters should be maintained in good repair and capable of performing their

intended functions

o Stairs, decks, and porches should be structurally sound and in good condition

o Windows and doors should be weather tight and function as intended

Interior of Building

o Floors, walls, and ceilings should be maintained in a sanitary condition and free of defects

o Stairs, handrails, and guardrails should be sound and secure without signs of excessive

wear and tear

o Doors should be equipped with fully functioning hardware and operate without

obstruction

o Building occupants should maintain their dwelling units free of the accumulation of

garbage and trash

o Owners of buildings containing two or more dwelling units should maintain common

areas free of the accumulation of garbage and trash

o Building owners should supply covered garbage containers adequate for the sanitary

storage of household trash between collection days

o Building owners should exterminate dwelling unit prior to renting and maintain common

areas free of rodent and insect infestations

o Building occupants should maintain their dwelling units free of rodent and insect

infestation

o Plumbing fixtures and systems should be free of leaks and other defects and function

properly

o Electrical fixtures and systems should be free of defects and function properly

o Heating systems should be maintained by qualified professionals and function properly

o Appliances should be maintained in a sanitary condition and function properly

o Fire rated doors, including hardware, should be maintained in good repair and fully

functional

o Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should be installed and fully functional
