Mission

Did you know that there are over 2,500 street trees in Newburgh? That's not counting the trees in the parks or on public open land. The Shade Tree Commission was formed in 1998 to protect and encourage street tree health, maintenance and beauty. Shade Tree volunteers meet the first Wednesday each month at 6:30 p.m.

Current projects:

Designation as a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation. This designation will help us when applying for tree replanting grants.

Citizen Pruner training classes and work sessions.

Hosting a forum to discuss urban forestry issues with surrounding communities' tree commissions.

Identifying "Champion Trees of Newburgh" in a series of articles in the Mid-Hudson Times.

The Shade Tree Commission is governed by Chapter 279 of the City of Newburgh Code of Ordinances.
