Mission

Did you know that there are over 2,500 street trees in Newburgh? That's not counting the trees in the parks or on public open land. The Shade Tree Commission was formed in 1998 to protect and encourage street tree health, maintenance and beauty.  It also sustains the city's designation as Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Other projects include:

Facilitating the planting of city trees.

Serving as an advisor to the Newburgh Department of Public Works on tree maintenance issues and needs.

Citizen Pruner training classes and work sessions.

Hosting a forum to discuss urban forestry issues with surrounding communities' tree commissions.

Identifying "Champion Trees" of Newburgh.

The Shade Tree Commission is governed by Chapter 279 of the City of Newburgh Code of Ordinances.
