City government relies on advisory boards to gather information and make recommendations on policies, actions, and changes to the City Code.
Advisory boards review architectural designs, hear planning and zoning variance requests, offer guidance on arts & culture, the waterfront, the care of shade trees, architectural and viewshed preservation, and maintaining & improving Downing Park. Other boards address economic and community development, ethics, assessment, recreation, and licensing for plumbers and electricians.
Citizen volunteers make up the majority of the advisory boards, which also include at least one City government representative. Depending on each board's charter, members serve terms ranging from 2 to 7 years. New members are appointed by the City Manager or the City Council, or they may be elected by existing membership.
Advisory board members serve on a volunteer basis. Attendance is required at evening meetings at least once a month.
