The Hudson-Fulton anniversary celebrations of 1909 provided the occasion for the most extravagent effloresence of public events, publications, and self-congratulation ever to engulf the Newburgh Bay — proudly promoted as the "Pivotal Point" of the year-long festivities that stretched from New York City to Albany. The programs, agendas, written accounts, and postcards of the 1909 commemoration evoke a period when the mid-Hudson Valley enjoyed a peak of prosperity, as the economic shift from mercantilism to manufacturing hit high gear.
